Even better, I believe the Cubs have a team option on him for $9 million next year.

12: Hours after posting until some anonymous douchebag had to bring up a historical point so banal and obvious that even he couldn't quite get himself to finish making it.

Perhaps you can come up with something involving a Billy Goat? By all mean, continue dazzling us with your mordant wit.

I must say....first of all, I enjoy your blog. And as a diehard A's fan, I did enjoy Harden pitching, in fact I started the season going to only Harden-started games. But in the A's defense:

6......the number of seasons Harden has been in the bigs

7......the number of times Harden has been placed on the DL

7.....the number of career playoff innings Harden has logged

22...Harden's October/September innings since 2005

105.....number of MLB pitchers going into today with more innings pitched than Harden in 2008, quite a good year for him

448.....number of MLB pitchers with more innings pitched than Harden in 2007...a down year even by his standards

339.....number of MLB pitchers with more innings pitched than Harden in 2006

2004....the last year Harden finished the season healthy (he came back in 2006, but had a setback causing him to miss the divisional round. He started a game against Detroit in the ALCS though...2007 he was done in June...2005 he came back and made 3 appearances in a relief role)

Yes Harden is a great pitcher. Lights-out stuff. But that's only when he's healthy...which, unfortunately...isn't very often. I was surprised that the Cubs of all teams made the move for him after the Wood/Prior problems, but he's been very good for them. He wouldn't have benefited a rebuilding team like the A's. But he's perfect for this year for a contending team like the Cubs.

But as for what the future holds, it's a big question-mark.

Agree with you completely. Harden's a huge question mark. But when he's on, he's on. And despite his recent minor setback, he's been nothing but aces for the Cubs. For how long, who knows, but so far...

I should add that I think Gallagher will ultimately develop into a decent pitcher for the As, a legit No. 3.
