World's Biggest Believer In Bench Points Struggles With Addition And Subtraction

Red wouldn't call +/- "a rotten stat" if he checked last night's game flow. +24 for the Captain (not the Dread Pirate Arkush).

+24 of suckage. I still don't understand the +/- I watched the game lastnight and I don't see how Hinrich has the best stat. He was bad again. I'm with Red that stat lies.

he played nearly 40 minutes in a blow out win. Something like +24 will happen, and Red only used a team losing as an example of the unworthiness of +/-. Duh, cherry-picking isn't a good idea.

And Hinrich did play better than he has most of the season. Not real good, but it was an improvement. Only 2 fouls too.

I really didn't even know he was in the game. Really quite. I guess thats good if you want him to be just average. The point is he is to be the teams best player. He might be one of the worst on the team these days. I still think he's sloppy with the ball and would serve better as a back up point guard on a team like the Spurs or Jazz.

This is what makes +/- such an interesting stat - Kirk obvioulsy didn't have the best individual stats going last night, but as a team they sure outplayed Charlotte while he was on the floor. Compare that to BG, who played great individually and played nearly as many minutes as Kirk, but with a much lower +/- of +11. So as well as BG was scoring, the margin between the Bulls and Bobcats was much closer in the time BG played.

I think people who don't like +/- just don't really understand what it's measuring.

For me, it seems like +/- is similar to passer rating in the NFL in that, while both can give an idea, neither is very useful for evaluating individual games. Both become more useful over a larger-game sample-size. Though, they're still nice to look at for individual games, too.
